Driven SkylineWhenever I can, I try to give local, self-produced musicians a hand through this review column. For this issue, there are several, the first of which is Driven Skyline by Flynn who created this music to invoke the feeling that he has when driving along the Skyline Drive in Virginia (which turns into the Blue Ridge Parkway here in NC). Flynn is primarily a guitarist/composer who has turned to the piano for a more spontaneous flow of creative consciousness.

I haven't heard a solo piano album in a while, and I found Driven Skyline quite refreshing in its unadorned directness. This CD album is very personal and intimate. Flynn's essence is very present in this music. It is almost as though he is sitting next to you playing just for you. These lilting melodies softly caress the ears and sooth the heart.

Though this album is consistent in its style throughout, Flynn discreetly nods in several different directions. There is a touch of classical as in "Almost There," good-hearted playfulness on "Elemental," and almost a lullaby in "Light Dreamer."

With his piano solos, Flynn creates an atmosphere of quiet solitude. If you enjoy the piano solos of George Winston (the comparison is inevitable), you will also find Driven Skyline your "cup of tea." To order, email flynnman11@yahoo.com.
