Even
though Laraaji actually lives in New York City, many readers
may already know him personally as he comes down to North
Carolina from time to time to perform and teach workshops.
He is a regular contributor at the Southeastern Conference
held each summer at Guilford College in Greensboro. This is
Laraaji's fifth album of music since 1979, including Day of
Radiance in collaboration with Brian Eno, who is considered
by some to be the originator of the entire New Age music movement.
Laraaji has been a pioneer in exploring music to facilitate
relaxation, healing and expanded states of consciousness.
On the CD album Cascade, Laraaji plays a
36-string instrument called a zither (also called a celestial
harp). Laraaji works with both ancient and original tunings
of this harp. He plays the zither in combinations of plucking,
bowing, strumming and hammering with mallets in different
rhythms and styles. He does not play catchy tunes that are
popular in our culture today -- he creates atmospheres of
healing and truth. In Cascade, Laraaji's music flows from
some deep wisdom of water. When one just sits in silence and
truly listens to a stream, one can hear all the sounds of
life. There's both consistency and random unpredictability,
harmony and discordance; and, with a flowing sense of spontaneity,
Laraaji creates these sounds as well as the sounds of life.
There are three tracks which are all designed
for some quality of healing. The first track, "Concentration,"
is designed for balancing the mind. The second track, "Circulation,"
is designed for balancing the emotions. "Activation,"
the third track, is designed for balancing the physical body.
A booklet is included with the CD album, giving background
information on the music, the harp, and the different musical
modes.
The album CD Cascade can be ordered from:
The Relaxation Co., PO Box 305, Roslyn, NY 11576.
