Jesus and Buddha were not reclusive masters. Although they certainly engaged in periods of excruciating contemplation, they were both aware that it was their mission to enlighten the people of the world to each individual's direct, divine connection to the source of All. Teasdale says "Universal mysticism means inclusivity of insight, experience, psychological penetration, approaches to the Source, the Divine, Infinite Consciousness." And he certainly includes us in his mystic path. Brother Teasdale is not just a Christian but a Christian of Catholic background and training. Imagine being asked to accept sannyasa (Indian monkhood), combine it with Hinduism and Catholicism, and then go and live in the world as a monk rather than retiring to a cloistered monastic life. A Monk in the World allows us to travel with this man who, like Jesus and Buddha, strives to live in the world, be of the world, and bring light into the world through the universality of spiritual mysticism.
