Theo Gutter, 2000
Vantage Press, New York
"Clara, it feels like walking
around in one slipper when you are not here." To me,
this pretty much sums up Theo Gutter's series of essays in
Dancing With Mosquitoes. The statement is written about
his love for his wife Clara. In more than 200 short essays
written on everything from the nature of God to the love of
his wife to the befuddlement over the Western world's current
values, Gutter tells it like it is. He expresses his joy,
his love, his anger, his frustration, his faith, his lack
of faith! Gutter gives us permission to feel what we feel
yet shows us that we learn nothing if we give only lip service
to shallow pools of frustration. This is one of those delightful
books that you can pick up any time, flip through to an essay,
and read for contemplation. This one begs not to be read from
front to back!
