Is That A Crystal in Your Pocket?
Soar to Life with Eddie Conner, The Hollywood BUT Doctor ®
Pardon me while I smudge my office, light candles and chant prayers to exorcise my negative chi. Just kidding. I laugh at this because the first spiritual person I met scared me silly.
In my twenties, while working in retail, a wild-eyed woman with giant frizzy hair sporting goddess-wear spoke in her whispering voice to me, “You have a big aura. Do you want to hold my quartz crystal?” I didn't know whether to thank her or call store security.
Placing her crystal in my palm, she used words like “chakra,” “aura,” and “chi.” Each phrase left me feeling uncomfortable as she implied that I, like her, was also psychic. I remember thinking, “If that's what psychic looks like, I'd just kill myself right then.”
At first, our interaction left me feeling skeptical. I wondered if mainstream America feels uncomfortable with our spiritual behavior?
Do You Stand In or Stand Out?
Which leads to eclectic spirituality. I understand that no two people believe the same thing about a subject or that there's only one path to enlightenment. Based on our childhood experiences we continue to hold tightly to comfortable, familiar things. By nature, humans are habitual and often don't like change. Don't get me wrong, we love talking about changing our lives, BUT actually talking about it and doing it are two different things.
Presenting ourselves with authentic, kind consideration of others is a gift to ourselves and to the world. We don't have to “stand out” in a crowd with our spiritual beliefs, instead we can “stand in” ourselves and radiate appreciation for the paths others choose.
When other people feel comfortable with us, they will allow more of our spiritual philosophy into their hearts. Many people “stand out” by shouting their spiritual beliefs at other people. This “standing out” principle doesn't work with genuine spiritual people who operate from an inside-heart space.
Five Keys of a “Stand In”
1. Appreciate
2. Intend your desires
3. Be kind
4. Don't give unsolicited advice
5. When people ask what your secret is, give them steps 1-4
Everyone is a product of diverse mysticism. Whether we are walking in nature, visualizing, meditating, sending light or smudging our homes, we are practicing our unique connection to the divine flow of the universe.
Today, I have an eclectic spiritual platform. It's interesting that the crystal lady from my youth provoked my desire for understanding chakras, auras, chi and how to create the life I desire, thus launching me into my life's work. What a gift she was. On a soul level I was ready for her spiritual enthusiasm to penetrate my thick, limited beliefs. Periodically she'll cross my thoughts, and I delight in sending her positive thoughts of appreciation.
I do honor other people's spiritual beliefs and practices. I take great joy in learning something new from other people. Maybe one day I'll get the nerve up to approach a stranger and say, “You have a big aura, do you want to hold my crystal?” Then again, here in Los Angeles , that line might actually work.
