Liquid Mind VIII - Sleep
by Chuck Wild

Sleep moves slowly, but “sleep” happens quickly. What!? You see, I believe I broke my record for shortest time to fall asleep when I played Sleep at bedtime and naps. How in tarnation can I review music that I play, but don't hear for more than a minute or two? Chuck Wild's composition is the opposite of “wild,” and is as good as it gets for transitioning one into body repose activity – sleep.

So, I'm going to make a suggestion for you, the reader, and myself. You'll need to buy this CD, which is number VIII in the Liquid Mind series, all composed and performed by Chuck Wild. Otherwise you may use any music that plays in slow motion (or you could turn down the “pitch” on your Talking Heads CD). I think the word “Whatever!!” applies here.

Continuing; stand or sit on the floor in your movement room; the music is playing; move as slow as you can, without thinking about your next move; in the moment. Simply move creatively, slower, even slower than you believed possible; let it be at least as interesting as watching a baby sparrow come out of it's eggshell. Your movements can take you to positions that strengthen the body and the mind, or simply bring tears to your eyes.

In this way, by moving, you'll be able to listen to tracks like “Moment of Grace” or “Touching Calm” from beginning to end. And there you have my “suggestion” for the month – a moving meditation. [I must now check on the baby sparrows that just came out of their nest, hanging on the screen window, flopping in the rain, keep them cats away...]

I'm now listening to “Breathe In Me.” This ultra-slow music has a classical sound, ambient and spacious, deeply present in its quality. All music is composed on synthesizers, without any attempt to imitate acoustic instruments. The other tracks are “Night Light,” “Journey to Peace,” and “Adagio for Sleep.” Needless to say, Sleep is great for any situation that involves healing, relaxation, and sleep, and as mentioned above, slow-mo' peace movement.

Perfect Universe
Cliff

Cliff creates a Perfect Universe with this acoustic alternative music which consists of a variety of guitar improvisations along with a light dusting of vocal mantras.

For lovers of the ancient Vedas and also lovers of beautiful guitar work, give this one a serious listen.

Cliff Smith is a singer-songwriter from Montreal who also teaches yoga. In this inspired work there is a mix of nylon string and electric guitar stirred and blended to perfection. He includes a little bass and percussion at times. There is a little Santana flowing through this recording and any lover of Carlos will surely be a big fan of Cliff's from the beginning to the end of this masterful music. On track 8, “ Judus Valley,” Philip Foiles joins Cliff on the alto sax, and it ended all too soon. So does the CD, so I started it over again and again. I really love this music. Complex without being complicated is how I describe the music of Cliff and Perfect Universe.

Bridging Textures
Jim Hudak

Hudak means “musician” in Slovakian. Jim certainly fulfills his destiny as a musician in many genres of music. Co-produced with Will Ackerman, Hudak has recorded his fifth contemporary solo album, Bridging Textures, which is a fusion of new age music, jazz, and classical with pop inflections. “This is not your parents' music” says Hudak. “I specifically try to create contemporary instrumental piano-oriented music for the 21st century.” And this he does with a touch of magic and wonder throughout Bridging Textures. Jim is a composer and arranger of thousands of songs over the span of his career. He is currently one of the most popular San Francisco pianists and plays hundreds of shows annually. HIs piano dances with violin, bass, percussion, sax and guitar. The tracks are uplifting and calming at the same time. Track 2, “Wild Goose,” soars like a flock of birds and track 10, “Bittersweet Passion,” moves the heart and soul with memories of love, passion and childlike innocence. At times this album is bluesy and then moves to an old-fashioned waltz. What a diverse talent this man is! What a joy to join him on his journey through the world of music!

Thank you, Jim, for gracing us with your talents and sharing with us the music of your soul. For more information on Jim, go to www.jimhudak.com
