Relationships: “As Above, So Below”
Dedicated to the memory of my nephew, Jared ben Avraham Reuven who died tragically on January 17, 2007, may his name be for a blessing.
G-d gave Moses the Torah by way of the written laws and the oral laws. Everyone can read the words in the Five Books of Moses like a storybook, but the hidden meanings are taught mouth-to-mouth from teacher to student, showing us how we form a bond through the close relationships with those who we both learn from and teach. How fortunate that a number of scholars over the course of two centuries saw fit to write down many of the oral laws before they were lost. Without them, we would have been left forever in darkness. And we give thanks to Judah ha-Nasi of the 3rd century AD for compiling them into The Mishnah, which includes six major sections on daily prayer and agriculture, Sabbath and other religious rituals, married life, civil and criminal law, the Temple of Jerusalem, and ritual purification. Thus, we understand that these laws provided the structure for a nation formed after the giving of the Ten Commandments. The individuals were brought together into a unified whole through the pleasing relationships of teacher to student, parent to child, friend to neighbor, siblings to each other, husband and wife, man to G-d, and G-d to man. Then and now, each person has a specific role to play in order to complete the picture. How to play the role is described in the Torah’s written and oral laws. Some laws are transparent, obvious to the most uneducated, while others require deciphering from a judge or sage. But, I would contend, we all need reminders even about the most obvious laws – at least I know I do on a daily basis. [Audio 18 min]
